The consular offices across Italy work to develop and sustain the important and longstanding relationship between Italy and the USA, and provide consular assistance to U.S. nationals and Italian citizens.

In the local U.S. consulates Italian citizens can: establish and renew passports and other official documents, apply for a visa (J-1 exchange visa, H1-B work visa, F-1 student visa etc.), renew a visa, complete the process for obtaining the green card etc.

The U.S. Embassy in Rome provides information and assistance to U.S. citizens and Italians in the regions of Lazio, Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo, and Sardegna. The U.S. Consulate General in Milan offers a full range of services for U.S. citizens in the regions of Valle D’Aosta, Piemonte, Lombardia, Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, and Emilia-Romagna (Provinces of Piacenza and Parma only). The U.S. Consulate General in Florence provides information and assistance to U.S. citizens and Italian nationals in the regions of Tuscany, and Emilia-Romagna (all except the Provinces of Piacenza and Parma).The U.S. Consulate General in Naples offers a full range of services for U.S. citizens in the regions of Campania, Molise, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria, and Sicilia.

Information for the U.S. nationals traveling to Italy:

The U.S. Consulates are responsible for their own fellow U.S. citizens, living or travelling in the host country. The visitors can apply for a passport, report Births, Deaths, Marriages, Divorces, Adoptions etc. happened in the host country. Non-emergency services (e.g. renewal of U.S. passports, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad and notaries) provided by the American Citizen Services Unit at U.S. Embassy Rome and General Consulates are available through an online appointment system. The U.S. nationals can schedule the appointment online. Citizens with lost or stolen passports must go in person to apply for a same-day emergency passport at one of the following U.S. Consulates General in Italy.

Limited consular services provided in the U.S. Consular Agencies in Genoa, Palermo and Venice. They are unable to accept or process emergency passport requests.
